Behind the Scenes: How Cool Air Keeps Stars Cool (or Cozy!) on Set

Cool Air is best known for serving sectors like healthcare and construction. But did you know that we got our start working on film productions?

That’s not hot air: since 1995, we’ve provided climate control solutions to Vancouver’s film industry. Some of our earliest clients were productions like The X-Files and Jumanji.

Back then, cooling a film set was about more than keeping the stars comfortable – old incandescent lights produced a lot of heat, and Cool Air would be called in to solve problems on site. What kind of problems? In one instance, set pieces were actually melting and tempers were frayed. Our team was happy to help cool things down. Newer technologies help maintain a more moderate climate, but Cool Air is still involved in cooling, heating and ventilating movie sets so that the actors and crew can comfortably focus on their Oscar-worthy performances.

Some of the challenges we solve for film productions today:

• Stage heating and cooling:  It can be hard to maintain optimal temperature levels on a huge soundstage. We’ve got industrial sized cooling units to keep everyone comfortable on hot sets. And for chilly shoots, we offer portable electric furnaces and electric heating panels, giving crews complete flexibility to focus heat on one specific area.
• Tent heating and cooling: Your cast and crew are looking for relief after long hours on set, and a climate controlled tent helps keep everyone happy. We offer a variety of roll-in, plug-in and turn on solutions – including cooling for those hot muggy days on a summer shoot, or suspended radiant panels for winter days.
• Specialty heating and cooling:  Every film production comes with different challenges that require customized solutions. Because we’re able to easily scale up our equipment, and we’ve been working on film productions for over 30 years, our friendly technicians can offer you the perfect purpose-built solution, no matter how unique your problem – we’ve even cooled prosthetics!
