Temporary Cooling For An Essential Emergency Service

In the spring of 2018, QuadReal required maintenance on a 200-ton chiller servicing one of their buildings at the Broadway Tech Centre. This was a particularly sensitive operation because one of the tenants was the BC Ambulance Service; it was imperative that they not have their air conditioning interrupted. They called Cool Air to provide temporary cooling while the work was being done.

The Challenge

This was a delicate project. 200 tons is a significant amount of cooling, and for obvious reasons the BC Ambulance Service absolutely could not let their servers overheat. The building would continue regular operations so the work needed to be as unobtrusive as possible.

The Solution

We were able to take advantage of reduced heat loads because of the cooler spring weather to utilize a 60-ton chiller and we developed a plan to strategically place the equipment and complete the entire install in just one day. The unit was placed on the ground outside the building and the water hoses and power cables were lifted to the roof and secured to the walls. We worked with the mechanical contractor to tie our connections into the building’s system.

The Result

The project was a success; the maintenance was completed while the temperature in the building was kept at a controlled level which allowed the tenants to continue their operations. We also co-ordinated with the property manager and building operator during the installation in order to not inconvenience the BC Ambulance Service, so operations were unaffected. What was expected to be a troublesome time was made simple by Cool Air Rentals.
