HOW IT WORKS

Hook it Up

Air Cooled Portables

(From 1 ton to 5 ton capacity)

These types of units need to have the Condenser air stream vented into the ceiling space above the room being cooled.  It can also be dumped out an open window or door.

Placement

  1. Position the unit in the location where it will most effectively distribute cooled air, while also considering the location of the electrical supply and where to expell the hot condenser air.

Electrical

  1. Plug the unit into the appropriate electrical receptacle.
  2. If you have a 5 ton unit, have a licenced electrician hook up the proper cable and breaker combination to electrically power the unit. These units require a three phase 220 volt circuit and use a Hubbell twist lock and will not run if phasing is not correct. Incorrect phasing will be indicated by a lit red light on the front of the unit near the thermostat and will require switching, by a qualified electrician, of any two of the power lines at the supply end of the cable only. Do not switch the phasing on our cord end or inside our unit as this can lead to equipment damage.

Set Up

  1. Untie the rope lanyard securing the flex duct on the unit in place
  2. Slide a ceiling tile above the machine aside and place the spiral duct into the ceiling plenum. Secure the duct in place with a tie so it doesn't fall out of the ceiling.
  3. Slide the ceiling tile back against the spiral duct catching the spiral wire within the flex duct with the edge of the tile.

Condensate

  1. All air conditioning units remove humidity or water vapour from the air they are cooling. This humidity is captured in the form of water and collects inside our equipment in a condensate reservoir. In a small air cooled unit, this reservoir can be either a large plastic 5 gallon tank, or a much smaller condensate pump reservoir.
LARGE TANK - If condensate drains into a tank, the air conditioner will turn off when the water level reaches a preset level. It will not resume operation until the tank is emptied to prevent the tank from overflowing. It may take from 1 day to 1 week or more for the tank to fill up depending on temperature and humidity levels. Make sure that the tank is placed back in the unit in the same position that it was before being emptied.
CONDENSATE PUMP - If the unit is equipped with a condensate pump, we will provide you with the appropriate length of clear 3/8" tubing to run from the unit to a drain. The pump removes the need to manually check and empty a large condensate tank.

Operation

  1. When all of the installation requirements of setting up the duct and condensate hose (if applicable) have been satisfied, you are ready to run the machine. The only way to control an air cooled portable in this category, is by use of the thermostat.

There are two styles of thermostats. The most common thermostat has a white case and a flip up lid. Its operation will be described below. Some units have a flush mounted thermostat which should be a bit easier to operate. Please phone us if you have any questions about the operation of either thermostat.

Start

  1. To start the machine, turn it on by pressing the MODE button on the thermostat until the word COOL is shown in the LCD display.
  2. Once you have selected the COOL mode, it will begin a countdown of up to 2 minutes.
  3. The initial temperature shown on the LCD display is the actual room temperature (Ambient temperature).  The desired temperature (SET POINT temperature) is set by pushing either of the UP or DOWN arrows.
  4. After the countdown period has elapsed, the unit will switch the compressor and the condenser fan on, starting the cooling process.
  5. The Evaporator fan (the one that supplies cool air to the room) can be set to continuous operation by pushing the fan button on the thermostat until the fan icon is lit in the LCD display. Set the separate fan speed switch to either HIGH or LOW depending on the amount of air you want to deliver into the space.
  6. Simultaneously press the UP and DOWN arrows to switch the unit between Celsius (C) and Fahrenheit (F) temperature display.
  7. In the event of a power failure, the unit will restart in the MODE and at the SET POINT it was on prior to the power loss.

Stop

  1. To stop the machine, simply press the MODE button on the thermostat until the word OFF is showing on the LCD display and the cooling process will stop. If the fan is set for continuous operation and stays on after cooling stops, press the FAN button on the thermostat until the fan icon disappears. The unit can be restarted immediately but the cooling process will not start until after the mandatory countdown of about 2 minutes.

Please remember that these are complex machines. If you follow the above instructions, you should have trouble free usage. However, if something should go wrong with the unit, or you are unsure of proper procedures, please call us immediately - Cool Air Rentals Ltd. - 604.253.4171. Continued improper use of any unit can result in damage to the unit and costly repairs.
